QUESTION OF THE DAY: Will I pay for my past sins?

Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun.” According to God’s Word, when we are born again, our spirits are reborn in the nature and likeness of God! We are spiritually made brand new at salvation.

A question that often arises is, “Does a Christian have to reap the physical consequences of sins committed before they were born again?” This is where the law of sowing and reaping enters in—we all experience consequences for our actions (Genesis 8:22). Being born again does not remove the fact that our actions will produce a harvest—either good or bad.

The good news is that as Christians we are never without hope. Once we repent of our sins (repent means to change one’s mind and direction), the Lord will empower us to live holy lives and help us through even the worst of situations resulting from sin (1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Corinthians 12:9; Hebrews 4:15-16).

We can have confidence in God’s willingness to help us because Lamentations 3:22-23 declares, “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2). We can partner with God by continuing to focus on His Word.

As we do this, the law of life will work through our spirits to make us totally free—spirit, soul, and body (John 8:31-32). Always remember that we serve a good God who loves us and is able to deliver us from anything if we will trust Him (Psalm 103:1-5)!
